Sofia is the Greek word for wisdom, sophia, used directly as a given name. It gained early currency through Saint Sophia, a possibly allegorical martyr whose three daughters were named Faith, Hope, and Love, and later through the Byzantine church Hagia Sophia, 'Holy Wisdom.' It spread through Eastern and Western Europe alike.
