Kasym comes from the Arabic root q-s-m, 'to divide' or 'distribute' — the same root behind qisma, 'fate, portion.' As Qasym Khan, it's the name of the early-16th-century ruler credited with Qasym Khannyñ Qasqa Zholy ('Qasym Khan's Bright Path'), an early codification of Kazakh customary law and a major figure in the consolidation of the Kazakh Khanate's territory.
