Kai has multiple independent sources rather than one: most commonly cited is the Hawaiian and broader Polynesian kai, 'sea,' but it also functions as a short form of Kaimana in Hawaiian, of Cornelius or Nikolai in Frisian and German usage, and appears independently again in Japanese, where its meaning depends on the kanji chosen.
