Jordan comes from the Hebrew yarden, from the root y-r-d, 'to descend' or 'flow down' — the river Jordan. It entered European given-name use in the Middle Ages, when Crusaders and pilgrims returning with water from the river would sometimes name children baptized with it Jordan, regardless of gender.
