Jan is the short form of John used across Dutch, Polish, Czech, and several other Central and Northern European languages, all independently trimmed down from the Latin Ioannes. The same three letters, pronounced differently in each language, is one of the clearest examples of how far a single root can travel and still stay recognizable.
