Meaning: supplanter, holds the heel

James descends from the same Hebrew Ya'akov as Jakub, but by a different Latin route: where most European forms come from Iacobus, James comes from a Late Latin variant, Iacomus. The two paths converged enough in meaning, if not in sound, that English ended up treating James and Jacob as two separate names from the same root rather than as spellings of one.
