Iskander is the Arabic and Persian rendering of Alexander, carried east by the historical memory of Alexander the Great, who appears in Islamic tradition as Dhu al-Qarnayn, 'the two-horned one.' The name has been in continuous use from the Levant to Central Asia ever since.
