Hina is commonly written 陽菜, joining 陽 ('sun,' 'sunny') with 菜 ('greens,' 'vegetable'). A separate, unrelated reading — 雛, 'chick' or 'small doll' — is the word behind hina-ningyō, the ornamental dolls displayed at the Hinamatsuri girls' festival, and the two are often conflated in casual association even though they're different names.
