Dawud is the Arabic form of David, kept close to the original Hebrew dawid. In Islamic tradition Dawud is a prophet and king, given the Psalms (the Zabur) and famed for defeating Jalut (Goliath) — the same episode that anchors David's story in the Hebrew Bible.
