Artyom is the Russian form of the Greek Artemios, built on artemēs, 'safe' or 'unharmed,' and linked by association to Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon. It has been common in Russia since the Orthodox calendar attached it to a venerated early martyr, Saint Artemius.
