Anna is the Greek and Latin form of the Hebrew Hannah, built on the root ḥ-n-n, 'to show favor.' In Christian tradition it is the name given to the mother of Mary, which pulled it into circulation across nearly every European language over the following two millennia — a separate route into Europe from Hannah's, which spread through direct translation of the Hebrew Bible instead.
