Amelia comes from the Germanic amal, 'work' or 'industrious,' carried by the medieval Amalia line of Germanic nobility. Centuries of use alongside the unrelated Latin Aemilia (the source of Emily) blurred the two together in practice, so that the pair is now widely treated as interchangeable even though they began as two separate names.
