Ali comes from the Arabic ʕaliyy, 'elevated' or 'exalted' (root ʕ-l-w, 'to be high'). It is the name of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law and the fourth caliph — a figure of central importance in Shia Islam in particular, where he is regarded as the Prophet's rightful successor.
