Alash
Meaning: uncertain
Origin: Kypchak
Alash is the name of a legendary patriarch figure said in Kazakh and broader Turkic oral tradition to be the common ancestor of the Kazakh people — the word's own deeper etymology is obscure, functioning more as a founding name than a translatable word. It carries real modern political weight too, as the name of Alash Orda, the short-lived Kazakh autonomous government of 1917–1920 and a lasting symbol of the push for Kazakh self-determination.
